Beautiful landscape painting will decorate any interior

Paintings, including landscape, most often are not natural needs of man. But a beautiful artwork indicates a good taste of the owners, their opulence, cultural and life values.

What is landscape?

The word landscape, translated from French, means terrain; in English, it has several meanings:

  1. visible features of an area of land, its landforms;
  2. an artwork of a corner of primitive or cultivated nature, which attracted the attention of the artist;
  3. fine art genre.

While working on a landscape, the artist paints either a real terrain or an imaginary corner of nature that he would like to see. Having decided on what will be on the canvas, the master chooses the direction in which he will work. The base is drawn on the canvas – pencil landscape, horizon outlines, composition bases, large elements, light and shadow. The landscape painter can focus the attention of art lovers on vegetation – flowers, bushes, etc., on natural phenomena – rain, snowfall, clouds, on celestial bodies – the sun, moon, stars, as well as on architectural structures. The painter is entitled to paint people or animals, the so-called figurative elements on the canvas.

Landscape genres

Landscape is just a background in the paintings of other genres. Let's remember that in the 15th century landscape was the background for the painting and portrait, it became an independent genre only a century later. And since the sixteenth century, thanks to the famous Dutch artists, landscape paintings were further developed.

The beginning of the XIX century is associated with the appearance of oil paints in tubes, thanks to which the color palette became much wider, many new shades appeared, painters could now work on the canvas not only in the workshop, but also in nature, when natural light fell. The most positive consequences of this affect the work of landscape painters: there were various motives for choosing one or another landscape, it became easier for the artist to convey his own emotional vision by graphic means. It was from that time the landscape paintings came close to the modern understanding of this genre.

There is such landscapes painting as:

  1. rural,
  2. urban (industrial, architectural),
  3. sea (marina, with lake, riverlandscape),
  4. space,
  5. astral.

Development history of landscape genre of painting

The first painters created their artworks in the Neolithic era. Rock art is known for drawings of the sky, the sun, trees, animals, hunters and hunting. Similar images were discovered by scientists on the Tassili-n'Adger Plateau in the Sahara, Egypt, the Ancient East, Rome, and others.

The Byzantine masters schematically drew the details of the environment: a set of trees pointed to the forest, a hill - on the rock, the tower meant the city. Similar conventions are found in the old Ukrainian icons.

Ancient Greece and Rome used natural motifs to decorate the interior of a home. In these works, errors with perspective are noticeable. Therefore, the works look fuzzy.

Chinese masters in the VI century began to perceive the landscape as a separate genre of art, the paintings reflected already realistic views. VI Century Chinese canvases - elongated vertical scrolls of silk or rice paper. Landscape in China played an important role in spiritual communication.

During the Middle Ages, Europe experienced the decline of the landscape genre. Christianity considered ancient forms of art "fornication." All painting was subordinated to church subjects. Images of nature were sometimes found only as a background.

For a long time, the landscape functioned as a background for a portrait or other story. In Europe, only in the nineteenth century, masters began to paint in the style of a realistic landscape.

The Early Renaissance presented the painting by artist Giotto di Bondone. He was one of the first to paint a critical realism of the surrounding flora. Thanks to Giotto di Bondone in the circles of painters increased interest in the genre. Masters lacked knowledge of the perspective of space. On the canvases of that time you can observe the clutter of nature in a large number of landscape structures.

On the territory of Ukraine, the history of the landscape is closely connected with the activities of Taras Shevchenko. The development of this genre occurs only at the end of XIX century. The development of the landscape was influenced by the paintings of S. Vasylkivsky, P. Levchenko, S. Shishko, and T. Yablonska.
