Bronze, wooden, stone, gypsum sculptures
Modern sculpture in architecture is more than just a visual form that serves as a decoration of the exterior. Today, the tonal color of the sculpture often becomes independent, acquires symbolic or ritual value. Changes in modern sculpture are based on the loss of technical traditions and the non-use of its anniversary and festive functions. Many of the traditional functions, especially religious and political, have been lost. Any statue is no longer a carrier of abstract thought and ethics. Therefore, has been undertaken a search for new functions and new symbolism for the conceptual expression of small aesthetic forms.
Decorative or interior versions of the sculpture are represented by familiar traditional materials, small forms. Compositions with human participation are in demand - a love line, animal figures, flowers, nudes, a religious or atheistic theme. More often there are artworks from marble, concrete, metal, paper or wood. If we talk about religious wooden statues in an up-to-date interpretation, they resemble the primitive sensual works of the Cherdyn masters of the 17th-19th centuries.
The current bronze sculptures, like gypsum ones, lack arrogance, they are usually utilitarian. This is especially true of park and street objects. Three-dimensional objects are created from previously unused materials – acrylic, tin, plastic.
One of the traditional ways to decorate a room or garden is to buy a modern sculpture in Ukraine. They are divided into two main types: volumetric and relief (flat). The reliefs can be sunken relief or intaglio relief (below the level of surface), low relief or bas-relief (slightly above surface), high relief or alto-relief (more than 50% above the surface). The variety of forms and subjects allows you to choose a composition that is fully suited to your preferences and will fit into the interior or exterior of the house.
Types of material normally used by Ukrainian sculptors
From the past to the present, the basic materials for creation are wood, natural stone, bronze, clay. Most contemporary Ukrainian sculptors prepare a clay, plaster or wax model in small size before creating a large work to see the artwork in full and avoid critical mistakes.
Wood sculpture differs from other materials by the method of creation and plasticity. When choosing wooden blanks, sculptors first choose the hardness of the wood, because softwoods are easier to handle: most coniferous species, linden, alder, birch. They work with saw, ax, chisels of various sizes and shapes. Wooden sculptures need special care, previously they were specially painted, although for centuries the layer of paint was not preserved and it needed restoration. Modern paint materials and stains allow to keep wooden works of art in perfect condition. The rich natural structure of wood makes it possible to produce expressive works from different species of wood, which are valued all over the world.
Usually for stone sculptures use marble, granite, onyx, obsidian, porphyry, labradorite. Since ancient times, extraordinary works of green basalt and purple porphyry have been preserved. Modern sculptors use artificial analogues that are significantly cheaper.
Among the metal sculptures should be distinguished: bronze, steel, cast iron, aluminum, copper, tin, gold and silver statuettes. The bronze is melted to a liquid state, poured into a mold where it hardens, then is removed all excess and are polished the seams. The most expressive works are created from bronze. It is durable, has a noble dark tint that looks spectacular with patina and polish. The garden sculptures are often made of stainless steel and are not easily exposed to the climatic characteristics of the region.
The clay is also popular for creating ceramic sculptures. From the soft mass the master molds the workpiece, which then goes through the firing and glazing procedures.
How the price of sculptures is formed
Many emerging authors, when forming a price, start from materials spent on creation, from how well the work was done, from the average level of prices in the market, if the author's works have already been sold at auctions, then from a confirmed auction price, from whether the artwork will be casted in one instance or there will be several castings.
An interesting fact: the painter and sculptor Edgar Degas created his sculptures of wax and clay, he believed that he was not ready to cast sculptures in such "responsible and eternal" material as bronze. Despite this, after his death, they were cast in bronze created from his wax art pieces. The first bronze casting had small number of artworks, it was distributed between world museums and private collectors, then there were many castings that increased the number of each of Degas's works to hundreds.
