Marble sculpture

Marble is formed from limestone through recrystallization or metamorphism, a natural process. The material has been used for thousands of years to create sculptures, tombstones and bas-reliefs. The first marble sculptures known to mankind date back to the Bronze Age. Thanks to its pliability, light transmission and color, marble allows you to create unique compositions. At all times, sculptors highly valued this material.

The color and color of the stone depend on the impurities in its composition. In nature there are gray, blue, red, brown, blue-black, green and yellow marble, the wavy pattern of which appears only after polishing and is determined by the structure of the rock. Pure white marble, with a minimum amount of impurities, is highly valued. Modern sculptors also use artificial marble, obtained from marble chips mixed with polymer resin.

The basis of marble is calcite - soft enough for work, but at the same time durable and resistant to crumbling, which allows you to achieve highly detailed sculpture.

During early classicism, marble sculptures were additionally painted, which gave them greater naturalism. Over time, the tradition of painting marble was abandoned. Pure marble is rare in nature, which affects the cost of marble sculptures.
