Leaving aside the dubious conjuncture of the USSR, career and commercial ambitions, Ihor Chamata was always engaged in free painting, and also conducted classes with students in a private studio. Perhaps it is for this quality of freedom that his friends and colleagues appreciate him, and the level of his painting makes it possible to consider him a true representative of the best traditions of classical realistic painting of the circle of Konchalovskyi and Mashkov, Serov and Levitan, Plastov and Herasimov.

Chamata was never inclined to artificial and pompous, so-called salon painting, but he was able to reveal the deep beauty in simple wildflowers and herbs, autumn mushrooms with moist forest leaves, which accidentally stuck to the caps, mature poppies and wild rye.

Since about 1980, the artist has been fully devoted to his easel-painting. This is mainly urban landscapes with the image of the historical center of Kyiv and open-air landscapes. Working in the circle of his colleagues, famous landscape painters - Yerzhikivskyi, Kyianchenko, Odainyk, Volobuiev, Ihor Chamata inherited features that are generally inherent in the generation that was formed in the 50s - 70s. Consequently, his landscapes have all the signs of the best achievements of social realism, widely known and extremely popular in nowadays in Ukraine and abroad.

The individual style of the artist is manifested mainly in extremely rigorous, restrained and  life-drawing. In landscapes and in some still lifes, he is close to the graph, because not a single detail escapes the master's eye, he sculpts the form with light and dark nuances, conveys daylight and evening twilight, mysteriously quivering night shadows of Kyiv boulevards. His favorite ones are small, thin, almost dotted out drawn strokes, the artist never replaces them with roughly wide ones, and does not use a spatula. True image of nature - the main motto of his work. Therefore, hard work and perseverance in the work have always been good neighbors of the creative inspiration of the artist.

Numerous still lifes with flowers most fully reveal his poetic and romantic nature - it is in "Lilac", written in the manner of Pyotr Konchalovskyi, in "Apples and Pears" - in the spirit of Ilia Mashkov, as well as numerous "Roses", "Jasmine", "Peonies" and "Petushki" you can find the secret of the professional success of the author. Painting the flowers, the master talks about the paradoxes of life, the transience of time, the harmony of nature.

Perhaps it was the artist's youthful love for the Impressionists that influenced the creation of a series of still lifes with lilacs in the beginning of the 2000s, because one cannot take his eyes off these canvases with pulsating color. "Red Poppies" in several variants also belong to the master's most successful arworks. Ignoring the minor details, he focuses the audience on the pure pigment of red paint and paints these royal flowers extremely vividly. Only many years of experience and beautiful visual memory help the artist to complete the paintings with fragile and capricious flowers - snowdrops, poppies, tulips and forget-me-nots.

And a very special place among still-life is taken by sincere and touching in its natural simplicity paintings depicting forest mushrooms, autumn apples, pears and nuts (by the way, not every master has still lifes with such a peculiar theme). Only true love for nature allowed Ihor Chamata to paint these autumn gifts so convincingly - fully, materially, but at the same time, very personally-intimate. He was able to enthusiastically and talentedly reveal their delicate beauty. It is by the example of these paintings that one becomes convinced again and again that the main thing is not the proper motive, but the ability of the master to reveal this motive - remember Monet's Peaches, the Konchalovskyi's Apples and Pears, Repin's Still Life with a Copper Basin. Sometimes for secondary artworks, you can evaluate the real professional level of the master.
